UK Sausage Week

Celebrating the Great British Banger!

As you’d expect, we’re always happy to join in the celebrations for UK Sausage Week here at Dales Butchers. We’ll have 20+ sausage varieties on offer throughout UK Sausage Week, including several gluten free options and a good number of our previous award-winners. 

Organised by the team over at Meat Management Magazine, UK Sausage Week is an opportunity for the whole of the meat industry to get behind one of the nation’s favourite culinary delights and to celebrate the fabulous versatility of the ever popular Great British banger.

At Dales Butchers, we’re adding to the UK Sausage Week celebrations by donating 25p for each kg of sausages we sell throughout the week to each of these two very worthy causes – the North West Air Ambulance charity and to See and Know (a local, volunteer led playgroup in Kirkby Lonsdale)

Although we’ve previously been fairly successful when it comes to receiving awards for our top quality bangers, I’m afraid we didn’t have any winners this year. However, we did get a couple of runner up postions for our Chicken, Black Pudding & Thyme Sausage, and also for our Lamb and Apricot Sausage. In addition to these we ralso received a ‘highly commended’ for our traditional pork sausage. We’ll try harder next year!

In the meantime, you don’t need to wait for another UK Sausage Week to come back around. As always, our sausage making will be continuing unabated and we invite you to come in and give something new a try.

DALES BUTCHERS NAMED SUPREME CHAMPION AT THE NATIONAL BBQ AWARDS

Dales Traditional Butchers of Kirkby Lonsdale proved it was king of the grill as it won the Speciality BBQ Product category at the Q Guild of Butchers National BBQ Awards, with its Lamb Rump and then went on to take the crown of Supreme Champion.

The competition, which took place on Sunday 13th May at Aubrey Park Hotel in Hertfordshire, saw butcher Mark Duckworth beat off a host of other butchers from across the country to take the top prize at the awards dinner at the hotel on Sunday night.

The products were cooked by one of the UK’s most exciting, up and coming BBQ chefs, Sam Wanstall from Torque Pitt BBQ and judged on a host of criteria including visual appeal, commerciality, presentation and, of course, taste, by the panel of experts which included Karl Pendlebury AHDB Beef and Lamb and Tom Lavelle from The Alfresco Chef.

Mark won the Speciality BBQ category with his Lamb rump, a beautifully tender piece of Cumbrian lamb marinated with rosemary. Each of the category winners were then judged for the Supreme Champion with Mark taking the accolade.

The judges said:

This really was the very best product of the day. The flavour was just gorgeous. The closest thing to heaven on a BBQ!

Winning butcher, Mark Duckworth, was delighted with the award:

“I was completely gobsmacked! It’s a great achievement for all our staff. We only joined the Q Guild this year, so to represent the North West and win not one, but two national awards for the Lamb Rump in the first year is fantastic. We are thrilled to bits.”

The BBQ Awards are held annually and are open to any of the 100 plus members of the Q Guild of Butchers throughout the UK. The seven regional heats, which took place in March, April and early May covering Scotland, Wales, South, South West, North East, North West, East and Midlands, each delivered one winner for the national finals. The six BBQ product categories were steak (prepared using only salt and pepper), traditional sausage, burger, speciality sausage, speciality burger and speciality BBQ product.

GOING FOR GOLD AT THE SMITHFIELD AWARDS 2018

We’re currently celebrating another nice award win here at Dales Butchers!

Organised by the Q Guild of Butchers, the Smithfield Awards took place in London on the 7th of February and they recognise and reward some of the country’s best butchers. An independent panel of food and meat industry experts blind judge products in 18 categories, such as: Pies, Sausages, Ready-Meals, Gluten-Free Products, and more. Nigel Barden, whom many of you will know from Radio 2’s Simon Mayo programme, announced the awards and we were really pleased to come away with 7 Gold Awards in total.
